Pet Etiquette in the Summer Sun

Dog on pavement

While we don our shades and sun hats to enjoy the summer sun, unfortunately, animals cannot deal with the rising temperatures, and dogs are especially at risk from severe overheating.

Showing consideration and respect for our four-legged friends is just as important as the respect we show to humans. Take care of our dog and our dog will take care of us.

Here are some tips to keep dogs safe and healthy OUT of the summer sun! They will also help you steer away from problems and possible fines from officials.

  • Keep dogs indoors: Dogs can only sweat through their footpads and cool themselves by panting. Extreme heat can cause heat stress and be fatal!
  • Water and shade: If dogs must be left outside make sure there is plenty of shade and water for them to drink. Take into account the shifting sun, even short periods of intense heat can cause heat stress.
  • Avoid hot pavement: Dog’s footpads easily burn on the heated roads and pavement. Test the pavement with your hand before walking a dog in the heat of the sun.
  • NO – to parked cars: Never leave a dog in a parked car in warm weather, even for short periods of time, with the window slightly open. Dogs can easily suffer heatstroke, even if the car is not parked in direct sunlight.

If you see a dog suffering inside a hot car:

  • Write down the colour, make and licence plate number of the car and try to find the owner.
  • Do not wait to call the Police, dial 911, if the dog is in distress.
  • Wait until the situation has been resolved.

Wishing you all a safe, healthy and happy summer with your healthy happy pets!
